The present article analyzes the quintessential premises around which the naturalist school was constructed and its subsequent impact during the 1880s in Spain. In addition to the intimate dialogue with the Spanish naturalist theorist and critic Leopoldo Alas, Benito Pérez Galdós also enriches his realist novels with some of the Emile Zola’s discursive theories (novelist, theorist, critic) in correlation to a wide variety of features of his own novelistic production.
